GRA to tax mobile money services

The Ghana Revenue Authority is considering taxing mobile money services in the country.

The move is in line with plans to plug loopholes in revenue mobilization in the informal sector.

Figures released by the Bank of Ghana show mobile money services are gaining strong traction in the country with the number of registered users growing 50 per cent year-on-year.

Newly appointed Commissioner General of the GRA, Kofi Nti dropped the hint in an exclusive interview with Starr Business News on some critical issues he intend addressing within the short term of his tenure in office.

“For me, one critical thing is the informal sector which accounts for less than four percent, we want to have a link to their database and explore how we can rope them into the tax net.

“Now mobile money everybody is using it, maybe some small funds could be coming from there, so we will be exploring the opportunities,” he told Starr News Fred Dzakpata.

Earlier Mr. Nti appealed to staff of the authority to support him in succeeding since revenue generation is critical to the success of the Akufo-Addo led administration.

The former tax policy advisor at the Finance ministry officially begins work today Tuesday February 21, after taking over from George Blankson.

Mr. Nti comes to the job with over 30 years of experience as a banker, economist, statistician, accountant and tax expert.
