K’si: Asafo market traders agitate over new charges

Traders at the Asafo market in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region are up in arms against city authorities over the insanitary conditions in the market.

They are infuriated over the lack of toilet facilities and a dump site as well as the perennial flooding in the market.

The angry traders have vowed to stop payment of the daily fees to city authorities until their concerns are addressed.

“The sanitary condition in the market is very bad, we don’t have a place of convenience and the market is always choked with rubbish despite K.M.A’s collection of fees, before it was GP0.50 and now they are increasing it to ghc1.00. We are not going to pay the new amount until something is done about our situation.

“It is not a sight to behold when you come to the market to buy, and whenever it rains the situation is so bad you won’t get a place to step and this situation prevents customers from coming to the market to buy,” some traders narrated.
